How to Stop Unwanted Text Messages and Marketing SMS?

Most of the people in India get unwanted marketing SMS and phone calls from various mobile network operators. These messages are very annoying, and there is no proper method listed by them to stop getting the SMS and calls.

Spam SMS are used either for promoting some product or scamming people by getting their personal data and information. If someone has sent you a text message without your consent and makes an offer which is too good to be true, then it’s most probably spam.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India also known as TRAI recently launched the NCPR, i.e., National Consumer Preference Register portal which enables a consumer to monitor and stop all the unsolicited promotions messages and calls.

However, not all messages can be considered as spam as there are many legitimate SMS services which send promotional offers and messages only after the consent of the receiver.

How to Detect a Spam SMS

Spam SMS refers to all the text messages that are unwanted and unwelcomed and sometimes can scam a user with their money.

The spam SMSs are usually sent in bulk to randomly selected mobile numbers. These type of messages can be of different types – you might be asked to reply to an email address or fill a form by clicking a link.

The primary purpose of a malicious text is to get your personal information through various fraudulent methods. The scammers might disguise themselves as some government agency or big financial company.

The most common scam is by pretending you’ve won a huge lottery or about to get a product delivery of something you have no idea about.

If you have received an unsolicited SMS, then:

  • Never reply
  • Don’t give any personal information
  • Never click on any links of the message
  • Never show interest in the advertisement of the scammer

Now, let’s learn about how to stop marketing SMS in the first place:

There are several methods which will help you to stop those unwanted messages. Here are the five steps on how to stop marketing SMS:

  1. Opt-out

The most simple thing you can do is opt-out from the promotional messages. If the SMS service provider is following the fundamental rules, then he would provide the feature of opt-out.

All you need to do is reply the SMS with one of the following words including QUIT, STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, TERMINATE.

You will receive a confirmation message saying that you have opted-out successfully from the SMS campaign, and you would not receive any text message further.

If this method did not work for you, then try the other methods listed below.

2. Do Not Disturb Registration

Do Not Disturb Registry by TRAI is one of the effective ways to block unwanted messages and calls.

The activation process is the same for all mobile network service providers including Airtel, Idea, Jio, BSNL, and others.

All you need to do is text “START 0” and send it to 1909.

However, if you want to get advertising messages just for a few categories, you can do that too.

  • Type “Start 1” and send to 1909 to receive only banking and financial related promotional SMS.
  • Type “Start 2” and send to 1909 to receive only real estate related promotional SMS.
  • Type “Start 3” and send to 1909 to receive only education-related promotional SMS.
  • Type “Start 4” and send to 1909 to receive only health-related promotional SMS.
  • Type “Start 5” and send to 1909 to receive only consumer goods related promotional SMS.
  • Type “Start 6” and send to 1909 to receive only entertainment and IT related promotional SMS.
  • Type “Start 7” and send to 1909 to receive only tourism-related promotional SMS.

You can also make a phone call to 1909 instead of sending a text message to register in the do not disturb service.

3. Identify the Sender

Carefully analyze the SMS and try to figure out who is sending the unsolicited text messages. Look for things such as mobile number, email address, business name, and others.

If you are successful in finding any of the contact details, then reach out to the offender and tell them to stop sending the spam messages.

You need to warn them that if they don’t stop sending these messages, you will take some serious legal action against them.

4. Block them Manually

This method is a bit laborious but helps in blocking the number instantly. You don’t need to worry even the do not disturb registry is unable to stop these type of messages.

If you use an iPhone, then go through the methods listed below:

  • Open the promotional SMS you want to block.
  • Click on the details icon on the top of SMS.
  • Click on the i icon on top of the message
  • Select the block this caller option.

If you are an Android user, then follow the steps listed below:

  • Open the messaging application.
  • Select the message you want to block.
  • Click on the three dot icon on the top right corner of the SMS.
  • Select block messages.

If you follow the above steps, then you will not receive any further messages from the sender.

It’s also important to note that some of the senders use multiple numbers for sending promotional messages. Therefore, this method may not work for all the promotional SMS.

5. Use Mobile Applications to Block SMS

There are many third-party mobile apps available for Android users which are very useful in blocking the unwanted text messages.

We hope, now you know how to stop marketing SMS and unwanted text messages from reaching your mobile phone.

One of the best ways to stop any marketing messages is by keeping your phone number to yourself. It might look very easy, but it is much harder to implement.

The hotel you stayed in your holidays wants your mobile number on the feedback form; the shopping mall from where you bought your favorite dress wants your number while processing your payment.

There are many other situations which need your mobile number including booking a flight, purchasing online, traveling in a cab, and others.

You always can’t decline to give your mobile number, but what you can do is not to share it on all places if you don’t want to get the promotional and spammy messages.
